Why you should consider Direct Access to Dental Hygiene Care/Teeth Cleaning near you

The Covid 19 pandemic unfortunately led to job loss and loss of benefits for many Albertans.

Paired with rising costs, people are searching for affordable/low cost solutions/ways to save money and oral health care is no exception

Ultimately, preventive oral healthcare/teeth cleaning is the most economical way to keep our mouths healthy.

Registered Dental Hygienists near you typically work without assistance, carry out our own in house sterilization, and use simple chair set-ups in smaller spaces, with relatively low cost materials.

The savings in staffing and overhead costs required in a traditional dental clinic allow us to pass those savings onto our clients, expanding access to dental hygiene/teeth cleaning, without compromising care.

Over 70% of people have some form of gum disease! Your Edmonton Dental Hygienist can help !

Dental Hygienists need xrays too!

In this image, the tartar buildup is all UNDER the gumline where we can't see.  All tartar must be removed/cleaned off from around the teeth and under the gums or it will continue to destroy bone that can lead to tooth loss.  Just as Dentists need xrays to trea a root canal, Hygienists need xrays to treat gum disease.

Oral Health for Systemic Health

A graphic illustration about oral health

Oral Bacteria....the culprit that contributes to other diseases.

Fact! The bacteria that contribute to gum disease and oral inflammation affect your heart and lung health,  your risk for developing Alzheimer's disease, Diabetes, Gastrointestinal cancers as well as adverse Pregnancy and Covid outcomes.

Dental Hygienists not only diagnose and treat your gum/periodontal disease via teeth cleaning but,  check all of the hard and soft tissues in and around the oral cavity, TMJ, and lymph nodes for signs of disease/dysfunction as well as check blood pressure to screen for High Blood Pressure "the silent killer".

Registered Dental Hygienists are one of the few Healthcare Providers that people spend the most time with each  year. We hold a unique advantage to be able to assess potential disease risk with trained eyes as well as be your healthcare advocate to help you achieve total health!

How is gum disease treated?

By Removing Tartar and Biofilm

The hard deposit (tartar) and biofilm (sticky stuff)  around your teeth are removed using hand scalers, power scalers, and guided biofilm therapy (air polish) ie: teeth cleaning.

If these deposits sit long enough under and around the gum line, their presence can lead to not only tooth decay but gum disease and bone destruction. Bone is the "foundation" that holds your teeth in your mouth. Bone loss leads to eventual tooth loss if not stopped

Oral Primary Healthcare Professionals

In October, 2006 Alberta Registered Dental Hygienists were granted primary healthcare provider status under the Health Professions Act.

Edmonton Dental Hygienists are recognized as self-regulated professionals that are fully educated and certified to provide direct care to dental hygiene clients. Alberta Registered Dental Hygienists have the broadest scope of practice in Canada.

With the assistance of an intra-oral camera , the measuring of pocket depths around the teeth (probing), taking and reading radiographs (xrays), and palpation of your head and neck area, we assess the hard and soft tissues in and around your mouth for signs of disease.

We also look for signs of sleep apnea, TMJ dysfunction, oral signs of systemic disease and oral side-effects of medications during your teeth cleaning appointment.

Whew! That's more than a mouthful!

The primary role of the Hygienist is prevention! Through diagnosis and treatment of gum/periodontal disease, education about decay risk,  management of oral manifestations such as dry mouth, canker sores, cold sores, fungal infections, etc.,  we help keep your oral health on track and functioning.

If we should detect any issue that cannot be treated within our scope of practice, we will refer you to the appropriate Healthcare Professionals that are qualified to take over that aspect of your care.
